Swastika
In Hindu practice, the swastika is an auspicious sign encountered in settings such as homes, temples and wedding invitations. The Hindu American Foundation describes several religious readings of its four arms. The existence of several explanations matters: one interpretation need not erase the others or become a mandatory definition for every community.
Swastika: auspicious meaning and the need for historical context
The symbol also has a modern history that cannot be ignored. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum documents the Nazi appropriation of the swastika and its continued use by extremist movements. That history is distinct from the older religious uses that continue in India and elsewhere. The direction of the arms alone does not provide a sufficient explanation of an image's intention or context.
A responsible caption should name the setting and meaning intended in the particular design. In a Hindu devotional composition, that means explaining its auspicious use without concealing the fact that another audience may recognise a history of persecution. An educational account can hold both histories clearly. It need not pretend that a religious user endorses Nazism, or that the Nazi history never happened.
