Mool Mantar
The Mool Mantar, also written Mul Mantar, is the foundational opening passage of the Guru Granth Sahib. SikhRI's explanation follows its descriptions of the One: enduring identity, creative being, freedom from fear and enmity, timelessness, freedom from birth, self-existence and recognition through the Guru's grace. These are theological descriptions, not promises attached to an object.
The Mool Mantar: reading beyond the first sign
Reading the passage as a whole changes how its opening sign is understood. Ik Onkar is not detached from everything that follows. The words give the reader an ethical and spiritual vocabulary through which to consider the One and one's own conduct.
SikhRI places this opening in the wider reading of Gurbani. An introduction can help a visitor recognise its ideas while leaving room for sustained study with a knowledgeable teacher. Reproducing a passage on an object does not carry the same meaning as reading, reflection and the way one lives.
For further study, compare a Gurmukhi text with a named translation and commentary. Translations make choices: a single English term may not carry the same range as the original. When an inscription uses only an excerpt, label it as an excerpt and preserve complete words. Readers should be able to tell whether they are seeing Ik Onkar alone, the opening passage or another line of Gurbani.
