Banyan Tree
The banyan, Ficus benghalensis, can send aerial roots down from its branches. As those roots establish themselves, they become supporting trunks and allow the crown to spread. Kew describes how a tree that begins growing on another tree can eventually surround it. A cluster of columns beneath a broad canopy may consequently belong to one living tree.
Banyan: one tree that can look like a grove
That growth pattern is the most useful detail to notice in a banyan design. A single central stem tells only part of its story; the hanging roots and spreading support make the subject recognisable. Kew also records the importance of its shade as a gathering place. The tree's physical form helps explain why an image of shelter can feel convincing.
A family may read the many supports as an image of continuity or generations. That is a personal interpretation offered by the composition, not a botanical fact or a universal custom. Naming the species keeps the account grounded and avoids treating every broad-canopied tree, or every sacred fig, as the same subject.
