Khanda
The Khanda brings a double-edged sword, a circular chakkar and two curved swords into one recognisable Sikh emblem. Its meaning reaches beyond the outline: the cited Sikh accounts connect it with divine oneness, discernment and responsibility towards others. Understanding those associations gives a personal keepsake a more thoughtful starting point.
Reading the forms
Sikh Research Institute describes the Khanda as a composition of four weapon forms: the central double-edged sword, a steel ring or chakkar, and a sword on either side. The emblem takes its name from the central sword. The surrounding forms are part of the composition, rather than an optional decorative frame.
This is useful when looking closely at a design. The circle, blades and spaces need to remain distinguishable. Reducing the emblem to a small metal relief should preserve their relationship, even where line thickness has to be adjusted for a readable result.
Oneness and responsibility
The Sikh Coalition's explanation associates the central sword with the distinction between truth and falsehood and the circle with divine perfection and eternity. It interprets the two outer swords through miri and piri, the temporal and spiritual dimensions associated with Guru Hargobind.
Sikh Research Institute similarly connects the chakkar with an all-encompassing Divine and the dignity and freedom of people. Read together, these accounts place the emblem within a moral and spiritual outlook. Its meaning should not be reduced to a promise that owning an object will bring protection or success.
