St. Thomas
Thomas is one of the Twelve in the Gospel of John. After missing the first appearance of the risen Jesus to the disciples, he asks for evidence; a subsequent encounter ends in his confession of faith. Reading the whole episode gives a fuller account than the familiar nickname that reduces him to doubt.
Saint Thomas: the Gospel account and the Chennai tradition
Indian Christian tradition connects the apostle with the Malabar coast and Mylapore. San Thome Basilica in Chennai is associated with his burial, and Saint Thomas Mount with his martyrdom. These are received church traditions; a conventional date such as 52 CE should be labelled as traditional rather than treated as a surviving travel record.
The history of the present church institutions can be dated separately. The Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore records the creation of the Diocese of Mylapore in 1606 and the formation of the combined archdiocese in 1952. Its account identifies Saint Thomas's church as the cathedral of the combined archdiocese. These institutional dates do not date the apostle's lifetime.
This distinction creates a richer local story: the biblical person, traditions of an Indian mission, and the later history of buildings and church communities. A visitor can explore all three without collapsing them into one timeline. For a Saint Thomas design, an apostle's image, a named cross and the facade of San Thome are related but different subjects.
