Rub el Hizb
Rub el Hizb names a subdivision used in organising Qur'anic reading; the familiar marker is an eight-pointed form. Quran.com's Rub el Hizb navigation offers a concrete example: its eighth division begins at 2:124 and displays the marker beside the text. In that setting, the sign helps a reader locate a division; it is not itself a verse.

The visual form can be constructed from overlapping squares. The Metropolitan Museum's teaching material places eight-pointed stars within the larger study of geometric design. Its account explains how circles, squares, triangles and polygons can be repeated and interlaced to create more complex patterns.
These two settings should be kept distinct. An eight-pointed star in a tiled wall may be part of a geometric pattern, while a similar sign beside Qur'anic text has a reading function. Shape alone does not establish that every example is a Qur'anic marker or that every star has one universal theological explanation.
Look at the surrounding composition: is there a central mark, an inscription, a repeating field or a solitary emblem? Those features help describe what is actually present. They also make room for the skill of the maker. A balanced pattern can be appreciated through its geometry without assigning an unsupported doctrine to each of its points.
