Makkah and Madinah are separate cities in Saudi Arabia. In Makkah, the Kaaba stands within Masjid al-Haram and is the qibla, the direction towards which Muslims pray. Its black covering is known as the Kiswah. Nusuk's official account connects the city with Hajj and Umrah, while the Qur'anic passage at 2:125 associates the Sacred House with Ibrahim and Ismail.
Makkah and Madinah: two cities, two distinct landmarks
Madinah is connected with the Prophet Muhammad's migration in 622 CE. Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet's Mosque, has developed through successive expansions from its early foundation; the Prophet's tomb is within the mosque complex. These are different histories and different architectural subjects, even when a commemorative design brings them together.
A paired image is best understood as a composition of two places. The Kaaba should not be captioned as a building in Madinah, and the Prophet's Mosque should not be used as an interchangeable outline for Masjid al-Haram. The shared association with pilgrimage does not erase their identities.
For an Indian family's account of a journey, an accompanying note can name the cities visited and the actual year without implying that everyone follows an identical itinerary. Photographs also belong to a particular date: changing courtyards, surrounding buildings and expansions mean that a historical view and a current view may differ. Let the caption say which view is intended.
