At Palitana, the sacred landscape is a hill of many temples rather than one isolated building. Shatrunjaya’s enclosures, carved surfaces and association with Adinath give a pilgrimage memory several possible centres. Naming the town, hill and intended shrine carefully helps preserve that meaning.
Town, hill and temple landscape
Bhavnagar district locates the Palitana temples on Shatrunjaya beside the town of Palitana in Gujarat. Its account describes hundreds of temples and identifies the principal dedication with Rishabha, the first Tirthankara. The town’s name and the hill’s name therefore refer to connected but different parts of the destination.
That distinction is useful for a reader following a family story. A stay in Palitana, an ascent of Shatrunjaya and a visit to one temple need not be compressed into one generic recollection of a Jain sacred place.
Understanding the enclosures
Gujarat Tourism describes groups of temples within enclosures called tunks, with principal shrines and smaller surrounding ones. It identifies both the Adinath temple and a four-faced shrine. The landscape can thus be read as a set of related spaces, rather than a mass of identical towers.
