Kashi Vishwanath
Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi is dedicated to Shiva as Vishwanath or Vishweshwara. The temple trust places it within the Jyotirlinga tradition. The name connects the deity with a particular sacred city rather than describing every Shiva temple in the same way.
Kashi Vishwanath: a sacred city and a layered building history
The trust dates the present main temple to Ahilyabai Holkar's construction in 1780 and records Ranjit Singh's contribution of gold in 1839. These dates explain important layers of the building seen in later representations. They should not be confused with an assertion that the city's religious history began in the eighteenth century.
A story about Kashi can move between several scales: the deity's name, the sanctum, the temple complex and the city. A close view of a gilded architectural feature tells a different story from a riverside panorama. Identifying the actual viewpoint makes a caption more informative.
The older image and the current setting may also differ. When researching a family photograph or a commemorative design, record its date if known and compare it with the institution's account. The continuity of a shrine's religious identity does not mean its built surroundings have remained unchanged. That distinction allows architectural history and lived devotion to be read together.
