Navkar Mantra
The Navkar, Namokar or Namaskar Mantra honours the Panch Parmesthi: Arihants, Siddhas, Acharyas, Upadhyayas and sadhus. JAINA's explanation emphasises reverence for their spiritual qualities rather than the naming of one individual Tirthankara. It describes Arihants through overcoming inner passions, and distinguishes them from liberated Siddhas.
The Navkar Mantra: a salutation to qualities
This explains why a Navkar inscription and a portrait of Mahavira are related Jain subjects but are not interchangeable. One is a salutation with a sequence of recipients; the other identifies a particular Tirthankara. Substituting one for the other changes what the design says.
Jainpedia identifies the mantra as a Prakrit prayer and notes that it can be sung to different tunes. Its discussion of the Bhaktamara hymn also shows why readers should identify a text by its title: the Navkar and the Bhaktamara are distinct compositions, even when a recording presents them together.
When studying an inscription, read the original, transliteration and translation as three separate aids. A familiar Roman spelling can conceal differences in how syllables are represented. Compare the complete line with a trusted text before drawing conclusions from a shortened caption. A tiny rendering that cannot be read should not be mistaken for a carefully presented copy of the prayer.
