Ichthys
The fish appears in early Christian visual culture. The Vatican's account of the catacombs describes it as a sign referring to Christ, alongside other symbols such as the anchor and dove. These images occurred in a funerary setting: they helped express faith and hope on the tombs of a community's dead.
Ichthys: why a fish became a Christian sign
Ichthys is the Greek word for fish. Its letters were read as the initials of a profession identifying Jesus Christ as Son of God and Saviour.
