Bodhi Tree
The Bodhi Tree at the Mahabodhi complex in Bihar marks the place associated with the Buddha's awakening. UNESCO describes the living tree west of the temple as a supposed descendant of the original tree. The distinction matters: continuity of reverence does not mean a botanical claim that one unchanged trunk has survived from the Buddha's lifetime.

Nearby is the Vajrasana, the sandstone seat associated with Ashoka's commemoration of the place. The visible complex contains material from several periods. UNESCO dates the principal brick temple to the fifth or sixth century and also records substantial later restoration.
