Badrinath
Badrinath in Uttarakhand is associated with Vishnu as Badarinarayana. The temple committee describes the principal black-stone image in a meditative seated posture beside the Alaknanda. The surrounding figures include Nara and Narayana, Garuda, Kubera and Narada. A Badrinath image therefore has a more particular identity than a generic standing Vishnu.

The committee recounts a tradition in which Shankara discovers the image in the river and installs it near Tapt Kund. It also describes its later movement to the temple's present setting under a ruler of Garhwal. The discovery account is a religious tradition; it is not a dated excavation report. The association of Nara and Narayana with austerity supplies another layer of the place's sacred narrative.
River, image and temple belong together in the story, but they need not all appear in the same miniature composition. A temple facade recalls the pilgrimage setting; a seated Badarinarayana identifies the form worshipped there. Those are two possible ways of remembering the same place.

Badrinath and Kedarnath are often discussed in one journey, but their principal deities and stories differ; one should never be used as an interchangeable caption for the other.
