Rama’s story is carried through the Ramayana, through places such as Ayodhya and through the choices of generations of artists. The relationships with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman are central to recognising a scene. A personal design can begin with one of those relationships or a particular memory, rather than trying to compress the entire epic onto a coin.
The Ramayana and its relationships
Rama is the central figure of the Ramayana and is understood in Hindu tradition as an avatar of Vishnu. The narrative follows his exile with Sita and Lakshmana, Sita’s abduction by Ravana and the search and conflict that follow. Hanuman is an important ally and devotee within that story.
A useful way to begin reading an image is to identify those relationships. Who stands beside Rama? Is the scene one of departure, searching, an encounter or return? The answer changes the meaning of a gesture. A familiar bow or name can help identify a figure, but the companions and setting explain what is happening.
A night on the mountain
A painting in the Met’s Shangri Ramayana group shows Rama and Lakshmana on Mount Pavarasana after an unsuccessful search for Sita. The catalogue dates the work to about 1690–1710 and associates it with the kingdom of Jammu in the Punjab Hills. It draws attention to the wide landscape and silver moon as part of the scene’s expression of sleeplessness and longing.
This is an episode of waiting and uncertainty within an epic often remembered through action. The landscape gives the figures room and makes distance part of the story. Looking at one such painting slowly can reveal an emotional register that a quick list of heroic attributes would miss.

Start with the person receiving the gift and the story you want it to hold. A family reference, the exact name of a place or a short account of the occasion gives the enquiry a useful beginning.
