Indian Peacock
Indian or blue peafowl is Pavo cristatus. Peacock refers to the male; peahen to the female. The spectacular fan is formed by the male's elongated upper tail-coverts, commonly called the train, rather than by the tail feathers alone. Its eye-like spots and blue neck make a familiar subject for an artist.
Indian peacock: what the display actually shows
The San Diego Zoo's natural-history account describes ground foraging and roosting in trees. The display has a role in courtship, while the female's less conspicuous appearance belongs to a different part of the bird's life. An account that describes only ornamental beauty misses those living behaviours.
A feather, a standing bird and a spread train make three different compositions. One emphasises pattern, another posture, and the third the scale of the display. Religious associations require the particular story or accompanying figure to be identified separately. A peacock can also be appreciated simply as a bird, without assigning the viewer a faith or a personality.
