Jagannath
Jagannath is worshipped at Puri with Balabhadra and Subhadra. Their wooden forms, the journey of the chariots and the sharing of Mahaprasad give this Odisha tradition its distinctive presence. The three figures at the heart of Puri
Odisha Tourism describes the temple at Puri as a twelfth-century foundation and identifies its principal images as wooden rather than stone or metal. Jagannath is accompanied by Balabhadra and Subhadra. The encounter is therefore with a recognisable group, as well as with the individual figure whose name gives the temple its identity.
For a reader coming to the tradition through an image, begin by noticing who is present. A picture of Jagannath alone and a picture of the three together make different compositional choices.
