Sanchi Stupa
Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh preserves a group of Buddhist monuments rather than a single building created at one moment. UNESCO traces the Great Stupa's beginnings to Ashoka in the third century BCE, with later enlargement and the addition of elaborately carved gateways. Other temples and monasteries record continued building over many centuries.
Sanchi: a monument made across generations
The gateways make the site a place of reading as well as walking. Narrative scenes and symbolic forms invite the viewer to recognise stories without relying on a single central portrait. The rounded stupa, its railing and its gateways have different roles in the overall composition; a gateway close-up should not be captioned as though it showed the entire monument.
Looking at Sanchi through successive building phases changes the story from a lone ruler's project into a history of repeated care and patronage. A visitor or reader can begin with the broad outline, then follow individual carvings.
