Haji Ali Dargah

The Haji Ali Dargah Trust places the shrine on a small islet in the Arabian Sea off Mumbai. Its complex description distinguishes the main shrine and tomb, mosque, minaret, Qawwal Khana and other buildings. The pathway joins this setting to Lala Lajpat Rai Road on the shore.

The approach is part of what makes the place recognisable. A view taken from the road, from the pathway or within the complex can tell a different part of a remembered visit. Choosing a viewpoint is therefore also choosing what the story will hold.

The trust says that accounts of Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari were passed down by caretakers and trustees. In one of its narratives, his followers place his shroud in the sea at his request, and the shrine comes to stand where it reaches a rocky place. This is the trust’s devotional explanation of the location.

Its website also explicitly cautions about the accuracy of events before the formal trust was established in 1916. That qualification is useful: the narrative can be understood within the shrine’s tradition without being presented as independently verified biography.

The trust’s pathway account dates a permanent approach to 1944 and describes later raising and rebuilding. It also records closures when sea conditions make access unsafe. The route is infrastructure maintained for visitors, as well as an evocative part of the shrine’s setting.

This article cannot establish whether the approach is open at a particular moment. Anyone planning a visit should follow the trust’s current instructions and conditions on site. A remembered sea view should never become a promise of safe access.

The restoration account describes reconstruction during 1960–1964 and damage associated with the marine environment. It records a later decision to use Makrana marble and the beginning of work in 2009.
