The Cleveland Museum of Art holds a sandstone Ganga sculpture dated to around 700 and associated with Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. The goddess stands on a makara, a fantastic crocodile-like creature, with a decorated tail. The museum explains that Ganga images were placed at temple doorways, where the river’s purifying meaning marked entry into sacred space.
