Gommateshwara Bahubali
Bahubali, known through the monumental Gommateshwara image at Shravanabelagola, is a distinct revered figure in Jain tradition. A thoughtful design should identify him correctly and avoid describing him as a Tirthankara or substituting an unrelated Jain image.
The figure and the place
Hassan district’s official account identifies Shravanabelagola with the monumental Gommateshwara, or Bahubali, image. This provides a specific Karnataka place connection for a subject also known beyond that one site.
The figure’s name and the place name answer different questions. Bahubali identifies whom the design depicts; Shravanabelagola identifies the particular monumental reference. Including both can make a keepsake’s intention much clearer.
From a contest to stillness
The district account retells Bahubali’s contest with his brother Bharata, followed by his rejection of worldly rivalry and turn to meditation. This is the Jain narrative through which the image is understood. The same source dates the consecration of the monumental sculpture by Chavundaraya to 981 CE; that is a different kind of claim from the sacred account of Bahubali’s life.
The change from conflict to stillness gives a reader more to notice than the height of the statue. A quiet, upright figure can carry the story without a crowded scene of the contest. If this is the image that matters to your family, ask the artist to retain its posture and proportions rather than substitute a generic seated figure.
