India Gate in New Delhi was designed by Edwin Lutyens as a war memorial. Delhi Tourism's account places the laying of its foundation in 1921 and its dedication ten years later. Its inscriptions connect it with soldiers who died in the First World War and the 1919 Afghan war. Those names are central to its purpose.

The arch is also part of a larger urban setting, but a heritage account should begin with remembrance rather than treating it simply as a photogenic entrance. The building's mass, inscriptions and open passage each contribute to the way it is experienced.
India Gate should not be confused with Mumbai's Gateway of India. Nor should an introductory design caption rely on old travel copy for the current status of every nearby memorial or visitor arrangement. The historic arch can be described with care while leaving changing practical details to current official information.
