Holy Cross
The cross refers to the crucifixion of Jesus. In the Gospel of John, Jesus is taken to Golgotha and crucified under the authority of Pontius Pilate. The account describes an inscription above him, the division of his garments, people standing near the cross and his burial. These details explain why crosses in Christian art sometimes include lettering, a body, accompanying figures or a landscape.
The cross: suffering, remembrance and resurrection
A crucifix includes a representation of Christ's body; a plain cross does not. The difference changes the immediate focus of the image, but it should not be used to guess a person's entire denominational identity. Ask which form a particular church or family actually uses.
The cross is also read in relation to the resurrection narrative that follows the crucifixion. Its religious meaning is therefore not exhausted by identifying it as an instrument of execution. For a Christian reader it can hold sorrow, sacrifice and hope together.
When looking at a local church cross, notice its setting and proportions before assigning a history to it. A cross carved into a memorial, carried in a procession or placed above an altar belongs to a particular context. Its shape alone does not establish its date or prove that it is connected with Saint Thomas. A useful local account names the church, the object and the source of the identification.
