At Dholavira, the story of a city can be read in stone walls, reservoirs and the spaces between them. This Harappan settlement on Khadir island in Kutch shows how urban life was organised around a demanding landscape. Water, skilled work and distant connections belong together in its surviving remains.

A city on Khadir island

UNESCO identifies Dholavira as a Harappan city on Khadir island in Gujarat and places its occupation broadly between about 3000 and 1500 BCE. The property includes the city and its cemetery. Gujarat Tourism also records the local name Kotada and places the site between two seasonal streams.

This is a landscape in which the relationship between settlement and water is immediately important. The city's remains invite a visitor to consider how people organised space, stored resources and maintained connections beyond their surroundings. The archaeological setting gives those questions a physical form.

Reading the plan

UNESCO's description distinguishes the castle, bailey, ceremonial ground, middle town and lower town. Stone construction and separated areas are among the features that make the surviving urban arrangement legible. The cemetery forms another part of the wider site rather than an interchangeable piece of the town.

A plan can therefore communicate more than a decorative pattern. It can show relationships between enclosed spaces, routes and larger gathering areas. If adapted for a keepsake, the drawing should identify what it represents and avoid adding imagined buildings simply to make the composition appear complete.

Collecting and storing water

The nomination dossier describes the collection of rainfall and runoff, including drains associated with the castle and reservoirs to the south and east. These arrangements worked with the city's seasonal water sources. The ICOMOS evaluation treats water management as a central part of Dholavira's significance.

Reservoirs make a compelling subject because they reveal planning through an everyday need. Their scale and position can be understood without a claim that every ancient technique was superior to a modern one. What survives is evidence of a particular community's response to its setting.

Small objects and distant connections

Gujarat Tourism describes excavated pottery, beads, ornaments, seals and tools, alongside objects that point towards wider exchange. UNESCO's account also identifies bead-making workshops and connections with regions including Mesopotamia and present-day Oman. City life involved skilled production as well as walls and waterworks.

The tourism account records the large Indus signs found at the site and notes that the script remains undeciphered. A modern caption should preserve that uncertainty. It would be misleading to assign a convenient blessing, family name or slogan to an ancient sign whose reading has not been established.

Remembering a place of discovery

Dholavira was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2021. A visit can be remembered through a clearly identified feature, the year of a journey or a personal interest in archaeology. The card offers room to explain why a reservoir, gateway or city plan was chosen.

Keep any archaeological illustration and its permission trail with the design brief. Describe the finished piece as modern, and leave official heritage logos out unless separately authorised. The object can encourage curiosity about the site without presenting itself as an excavated artefact or official issue.

प्रश्न

Where is Dholavira?
It is on Khadir island in Kutch, Gujarat, in the Great Rann landscape.
Can the Indus signs be translated into a personalised message?
