The North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy describes the attribution of Ayurveda’s origin to Dhanvantari as part of Hindu mythology. That phrasing gives the reader the right register: the figure belongs to a sacred account of medical knowledge, rather than a securely dated modern biography.

The distinction leaves room to appreciate why the name matters to devotees and to people interested in the cultural background of Ayurveda. Respect for a tradition does not require presenting every inherited origin account as an independently verified historical event.

IGNCA’s Kashi account discusses Dhanvantari through Puranic narratives, including his emergence in connection with the churning of the ocean and his association with the vessel of amrita. The vessel is therefore more than a decorative container: it identifies a particular sacred story about divine medicine.

This is a narrative motif, not a claim about the contents or effects of a modern product. An artist should work from an identified image and preserve its important attributes, rather than add an unspecified pot to any figure and assume that the subject will remain clear.

IGNCA’s account also records Dhanvantari worship in Kashi at Dhanteras. Its discussion brings together place, sacred genealogy and medical tradition. Those strands are best read as attributed accounts; the page’s sweeping claims about the first medical institutions are not needed to understand the local association.

The Wellcome Collection separately catalogues an illustration of Dhanvantari under the reference Sanskrit 172. Such an identified image gives research a traceable starting point. A catalogue record and a local sacred account offer different kinds of evidence, and neither makes an unreviewed modern design automatically accurate.

The Ministry of Ayush announced that Ayurveda Day is observed on 23 September each year from 2025. Previously it was held on Dhanvantari Jayanti, or Dhanteras. The change means that the national observance and the lunar-calendar festival should no longer be treated as the same date.

This matters for a dated gift or event inscription. Ask which occasion is intended and verify the year before engraving it. A permanently reused caption saying that Ayurveda Day always falls on Dhanteras would now be misleading, even if it appeared in an older article.

A thoughtful dedication can name the person’s care, teaching or commitment without making a claim about medical outcomes. A few specific words of thanks may be more fitting than a grand slogan. If the gift marks a professional milestone, use the correct qualification or event name supplied by the recipient.

The card can explain the choice of Dhanvantari and the image behind it. Keep the coin legible and let the presentation support the message. Neither the metal nor the price should be described as a measure of a practitioner’s skill or as something that improves health.
