Om
Om, also written Aum, is more than the outline of a familiar printed character. The Mandukya Upanishad places the syllable beside an inquiry into the self and consciousness. Its teaching relates A, U and M to waking, dreaming and deep sleep, then turns beyond those divisions to the fourth, turiya. A written Om and a recited Om consequently approach the same subject through different senses.
Om: a syllable, a written sign and a way of reading consciousness
Swami Krishnananda's commentary reads the syllable through that progression of experience. This is a named interpretation within Vedanta, not a claim that every household explains Om in precisely the same language. Popular illustrations that assign a separate state to each curve of a modern glyph should not automatically be presented as diagrams drawn by the Upanishad itself.
An Om design can therefore invite a small but worthwhile question: is the emphasis on sound, contemplation or the recognisable written form? When Om appears beside Shiva in a devotional composition, the syllable and the deity retain their own identities. The combined image can be read alongside Shiva's particular stories, rather than giving the syllable an invented single origin in that composition.
