A companion in the Ramayana
The Ramayana tells of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and their encounter with Ravana. Hanuman is Rama’s ally and devotee, with an important role in the search for Sita and the struggle that follows her abduction. The Met’s introduction to Ramayana art places this narrative within a long history of artistic interpretation.
For a new reader, relationships provide a useful way into the story. Identify who is present and what each figure is doing before treating an image as an isolated emblem of strength. A gesture directed towards Rama carries a different part of the narrative from a scene of flight, a meeting with Sita or a moment of battle.
Hanuman in conversation
An eleventh-century copper-alloy sculpture from Tamil Nadu, now at the Met, shows Hanuman with a raised left hand. The museum reads the gesture as respectful conversation with Rama. It identifies the figure as part of an ensemble centred on Rama, Sita and Lakshmana, within the processional imagery of South Indian Vaishnava temples.
This is a way of meeting Hanuman through attention rather than spectacle. The catalogue points to the human-like body and the face and tail that identify him. Seen in that setting, the figure’s meaning comes partly from whom he addresses. The ensemble matters as much as the single silhouette.
