Kal Bhairava of Ujjain

Ujjain district places the shrine by the Shipra and explains Kal Bhairava within the Shaiva tradition of the eight Bhairavas. Madhya Pradesh Tourism also describes his role as the city's guardian, or Kotwal. The local title gives the devotion a relationship with the city itself.

That identity is useful when reading a pilgrimage account. Ujjain contains several distinct sacred places, and a visit to Kal Bhairava should keep its own name and reference. A familiar image from another shrine does not automatically record the same encounter.
