Sammakka and Saralamma of Medaram
नाम र सम्बन्धित शब्द: Sammakka · Saralamma · Sarakka · Medaram Jatara · Sammakka Sarakka Jathara
Mulugu, Telangana
At Medaram, remembrance moves between village, stream, sacred platforms and forest. Sammakka and Saralamma are honoured through a living tradition with a central Koya community role. The Jatara brings stories of courage together with processions and offerings whose local meanings deserve to be understood in their own terms.

Medaram and the Koya tradition
Mulugu district locates Medaram in Tadvai mandal, Telangana. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs' account of the 2022 Jatara identifies the Koya community and its traditional priests as central to the ceremonies. It describes a four-day gathering held every two years.
Naming that community role matters. The festival should not be reduced to a generic pair of goddess images or used to speak for every Adivasi community in India. Its places, ritual responsibilities and inherited forms of remembrance give Medaram its particular identity.

A story of courage and remembrance
The district's account presents Sammakka and her daughter Saralamma through a tradition of resistance to unjust rule. It also recounts a sacred origin story in which Sammakka is found as a child among tigers and raised by a local chief. These are narratives through which the goddesses' significance is remembered.
The same account associates Jampanna Vagu with Sammakka's son and his sacrifice in battle. The stream thus belongs to the remembered landscape as well as the physical route of the gathering. The narrative is presented here as local tradition, without assigning a disputed battle date or treating a sacred story as an independently proven event.
Arrival at the gaddelu
The ministry's 2022 report describes Koya priests bringing Saralamma's sacred insignia from Kannepally to her gadde, or platform, at Medaram. Music and procession accompany the arrival. Its description of sacred vessels and ritual materials is more specific than a general statement that an idol is carried to a temple.
The programme linked by Mulugu district then describes Sammakka's arrival from Chilukalagutta, the period of darshan and the concluding return to the forest, called Vana Pravesham. This sequence connects several places in one observance. A past programme explains that pattern but does not confirm the next gathering's dates or arrangements.

Why bangaram means jaggery here
The programme identifies a distinctive offering of bellam, or jaggery, referred to as bangaram, meaning gold. A Ministry of Culture report on the 2022 gathering also records devotees bringing jaggery. The word's devotional use in this setting should not be turned into a sales instruction to buy precious metal.
For a reader considering a keepsake, the distinction is essential. A modern coin may be a family's voluntary remembrance of a journey. It is not established by these sources as a required festival purchase, a replacement for the offering or a means of securing the goddesses' favour.

Remembering Medaram with care
A place name, an approved Telugu dedication or the year of a family visit can provide a clear starting point. If a visual representation is requested, ask the intended community what it depicts and whether its use is appropriate. A modern illustration circulating online should not automatically be called an ancient or universally accepted form.
Keep the longer memory on a card and review names, image permissions and the composition before production. The enquiry is for an independent object. It does not establish priestly approval, official festival issuance or a ritual service.
